KEEP WALLER WILD
Waller Creek Design Competition Finalist
Austin, TX
The “Keep Waller Wild” entry finalist to redesign Austin’s Waller Creek proposes a poetic vision of a beautiful Waller Creek, robust with ecological health, refreshing as a respite from the city, and connected in a way that knits the neighborhoods together. Core to the vision is bringing the nature of the creek back, a re-wilding of the creek. The Wild is the unifying element that builds this creek as a catalyst for new uses and activities, a social place for all people and a vital place in downtown. Overlaid on that are new connections and pathways to give access for all and new places and programs: a developed Urban Canyon and East Side, a gracious Waterloo Park with a large festival lawn and broad terraces overlooking the lake, a re-invented Palm Park serves as a family anchor with a significant new kind of child play environment that engages mind and body, and a new delta, bird sanctuary and environmental center at the outlet of the creek into Lady Bird Lake. The plan intends to heal Waller Creek, create strong social and cultural connections across the watershed and result in economic growth for Austin east and west, north and south.
