HENDERSON-HOPKINS SCHOOL
Baltimore, MD
The first planned ground-up Baltimore public school in nearly 25 years, The Henderson-Hopkins School is envisioned to play a key role in making the single largest redevelopment project in Baltimore, Baltimore's new East Side, a great community. The school opened in September 2009 in temporary quarters. The new school will house the innovative school programs for grades K-8 as well as provide a place for those who live and work in East Baltimore to learn, recreate, and come together. The design adapts each classroom and common-space clusters to specific grade-level's changing needs and incorporates active exterior learning spaces including science/art terraces, roof gardens, playing fields, student gallery, weather stations, school garden and orchard. The site organization and massing respect and integrate into the existing historic East Baltimore urban fabric and provide a safe, familiar and exciting indoor and outdoor learning environment.
